MUNICIPAL BUILDING ROTUNDA

Municipal Building Rotunda

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Municipal Building, built to house both the Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse, was designed by the architectural firm of Long and Kees and opened its doors to the public in 1895.

The rotunda, as it is seen today, was completed in 1906 for the unveiling of the Father of Waters. It was designed to be the center of civic life for the City and County and has provided a public forum for inaugural celebrations, award ceremonies, political addresses, and community meeting for nearly a century. In November 2002, the Municipal Building Commission began a year-long Rotunda Restoration Project to restore the space to its original splendor.
